Saint-Valery-sur-Somme

William the Conqueror's invasion fleet set sail for England from the port in 1066. In 1431 Joan of Arc was held prisoner in the local prison before she was taken to Rouen and burnt at the stake.
In the 19th century Saint-Valery was popular with artists and writers; Victor Hugo, Jules Verne, Sisley and Degas all had villas here at one time or another.
