Abbeville is situated on the River Somme, 12 miles (20 km) from its mouth in the English Channel.
Abbeville takes its name from the Roman occupiers who named it "Abbatis Villa".
During the 9th century it was part of the abbey of Saint-Riquier and an important fort city responsible for the defense of the Somme.
